History

SAWMILL TO FARM TO INN

Farm Road Estate’s rich history dates back over two hundred years. In 1796, William Cragg built a sawmill and the first business in what would later become the town of West Dover, Vermont. It served in that capacity for over 100 years, eventually becoming a working farm. In the late 1960s, it was purchased by the Williams family who lovingly converted it to The Inn at Sawmill Farm. The elegant country inn would become Vermont’s only member of the prestigious French Relais & Chateau chain and boasted a wine cellar of over 20,000 bottles. It hosted famous guests such as Oprah Winfrey and Paul Newman.

Re-Birth

In 2019, the Levesque and Walters families, together with friends, breathed new life into the property, thoughtfully restoring the luxury homes and inn and uniting them under the name Farm Road Estate.

Today, the estate embraces a modern farmhouse aesthetic that flows through the guest rooms, shared spaces, outdoor fire pits, and gardens. The 20 rooms and homes feature exposed beam ceilings, hardwood floors, and plush pillow-top mattresses, offering a warm balance of comfort and understated elegance.
